L’isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Fontaine-de-Vaucluse and Gordes

One of the days that I was looking most forward to on our Provence trip, was visiting the antique market in L’isle-sur-la-Sorgue. I had heard about this antique market that fills the streets of this little Provence town every Sunday and that it was not to be missed. Brian and I love to visit the downtown square of McKinney Texas about 45 minutes from where we live which is filled with stores that carry treasures found in the South of France. So we were beyond excited to be able to go straight to the source!

We arrived early and found parking near the center of town. L’isle-sur-la-Sorgue is named for the river that runs through the center of town which is where you can find the market. This market was different than the other markets we had seen on our trip. There were the usual food and linen vendors lining the river but there were also many more tents with special one-of-a-kind treasures.

We had so much fun wandering around L’isle-sur-la-Sorgue. You can enjoy the market for hours but the shops are not to be missed, either. It’s the kind of town that you just want to explore every little alleyway. We didn’t do much shopping, even though you easily could. It was fun to just explore and take everything in.

After spending most of the day in L’isle-sur-la-Sorgue, we drove to a neighboring river town, Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, for a quick stop on our way back home. Fontaine-de-Vaucluse has a completely different feel than L’isle-sur-la-Sorgue. There were local families that had set up camp for the day along the river. People were swimming, picnicking and just enjoying the outdoors with family. It was a nice change from the very touristy L’isle-sur-la-Sorgue.

It was the hottest part of the day so we did like the locals and found a shady spot by the river and just sat there listening to the water flow by. The town itself is very small and quiet. It looked like you could hike up to an outlook, but by this point in the day we decided our feet had been through enough.

That night we got cleaned up and drove to Gordes for my celebratory birthday dinner. We had made reservations at the beautiful hotel La Bastide de Gordes in their restaurant La Citadelle. I wanted to get there a little before our reservation to be able to see some of Gordes. This is quite the impressive village. The view driving in will take your breath away. Be sure to search “town view point Gordes” on Google Maps to find the perfect vantage point.

We had an amazing dinner at La Citadelle. They seated us on the terrace so we got to enjoy our meal while watching the sunset. If you are in the area, I highly recommend stopping for a bite, or even a drink to enjoy the view. It’s one of the best in the area! xo Bryn
