The Five Coat Styles Worth Investing In

One clothing item I can’t get enough of is coats. It may seem silly to have multiple different styles and colors of coats, trust me, I ask myself why I need so many. My argument is that in the winter, your coat is essentially your entire outfit. It’s what people see so I justify having several because I want the variety. In my defense I do wear all of them. My day job does require me to be outside at times, so I need my coats to be professional but keep me warm. Over the years I have amassed quite the collection, but there are a few staples that are worth adding to your wardrobe. Here are my suggestions for the five coat styles worth investing in.

The Masculine Coat

The Masculine Coat is one of my favorite coat styles. It’s a tailored silhouette that has a professional feel. The shape of a masculine coat is similar to blazer and is much more fitted than a typical overcoat. I would say the majority of my coats fall into the masculine coat category. I also find it to be one of the most flattering shapes for everyone. It looks great over wide leg pants, sweater dresses or skinny jeans and boots.

The Trench Coat

The Trench Coat is one of my top wardrobe must-haves. It’s the best all-season coat. I wear my trench coat year round, mostly in the fall and spring when we have the rainy weather roll in. I still reach for it in the winter when I need to stay dry. I have the classic trench coat style with the double-breasted buttons and tie-waist. It will always be in style and because of that, it’s worth investing in a good quality trench coat. I also have an oversized style that I love to be able to layer over heavier sweaters in the colder months.

The Camel Coat

A favorite of mine… The Camel Coat. If there is ever a question about what my number one wardrobe must have is, look no further. The camel coat is such a versatile piece. For anyone wondering what the top coat styles worth investing in are, the camel coat is number one. I like that you can pair the camel with browns, greys, navy and black. It is a much more interesting alternative to a black coat.

The Oversized Coat

The Oversized Coat is my most recent addition to my collection. It’s very on-trend right now, but I still see similar styles every year so I feel like they are worth investing in. Although, I would recommend a more reasonable price point as these are not as classic as the other coat styles. I love the versatility of an oversized coat. I have worn it with my skirts and dresses so far this fall and love the look. I don’t find the oversized coat style to be as warm as a more fitted version, so I went up a size to be able to layer the oversized coat over either a blazer or one of my masculine coats.

The Plaid Coat

My go-to professional coat style is a plaid or herringbone. For a professional wardrobe, I love the idea of your coat being an additional piece to your outfit. Especially if you will be working in conditions that require you to be in your coat. I wear black pants at work almost daily, so having a plaid coat in either a color or black and white, adds interest and pattern to my outfit.

These are five coat styles worth investing in. Each one will round out your wardrobe and offer the most use. If you are not quite the coat collector as I am, then I recommend starting with a classic. Either the camel coat or the classic trench will be the best place to start. xo Bryn
