Bonnieux, Lourmarin and Lacoste in Provence

After such a beautiful first night in Provence, we woke up the next morning excited to start the day. I had planned out the towns I wanted to visit based on the market days and which towns were closest to each other. On our first full day the market was in Bonnieux. Bonnieux was a short drive from where we were staying so we arrived early in the morning and found a parking spot close to the middle of town and started exploring.

We started walking towards the top of the town that is perched on the side of a hill. The views were amazing and well worth the steep climb. As we were standing there taking in the scenery, we heard music and chatter coming from the streets below. We followed the sound to the market. The size of the Bonnieux market is much smaller compared to the others that we experienced on our trip. I’m glad it was our first experience with French markets because it was a good way to ease into it.

The markets can be overwhelming since they tend to go on for miles and take over the town. Vendors set up booth after booth with everything from fresh produce to linens. The Bonnieux market is smaller and gave us a perfect introduction to Provencal markets.

We wandered through the market, stopping to pick up a few treasures to take home. But after spending a short time in Bonnieux, it was time to head to our next stop.

I knew I wanted to visit Lourmarin, since it has been described as one of Provence’s most beautiful villages. Lourmarin is a little bit of a drive from Bonnieux and it is a challenging one, through the mountains. Brian loved every minute of it. But I admit I didn’t relax for one second as we rounded one sharp turn after the next.

When we made it, I realized that Lourmarin was well worth the stressful drive. It was market day in Lourmarin as well and the town was packed! I almost wish we had visited on the non-market day because the town itself is beautiful with so many great shops to explore.

We had lunch at a cafe off the beaten path and then strolled through the market, stopping for a little ice cream to cool off in the hot afternoon sun. The vendors were starting to pack up so we decided to head back towards our BNB making one more stop along the way… Lacoste.

Lacoste is also beautiful as it is located at the top of a very steep hill. This town has a SCAD campus so there are some very talented budding artist that showcase their work there. We didn’t stay long as it was the hottest part of the day but I’m so glad we made the detour before heading back to spend the afternoon by the pool. Xo Bryn
