Coats. I love them! I just can’t help myself. Texas doesn’t even get that cold but I still find myself saying “I need this!” way too often. I come from a long line of women who believe in the importance of statement coats. Starting with my great-grandmother from Germany who sported her fur coats, to my grandmother (also German) who was always dressed to the nines. She never left the house without a statement coat that perfectly matched her outfit. My earliest fashion memories were playing around in my mom’s closet. She had everything from a hot pink duster (obsessed) to a leather ankle length coat completely fur-lined. While I am more of a faux fur girl, I can’t deny that these fabulous women shaped my love of fashion.
I have talked about my adoration of the camel coat on the blog recently as a classic piece that every woman needs in her wardrobe. But I also believe that your coats can be fun and become the statement piece of your outfit. It is after all, the top layer, so why not make it something fabulous?
This plaid coat has me thinking fall! There is no pattern more “fall” than plaid, so it was an easy choice for me. I love navy with a pop of red and always feel like that combination is a staple. The coat is light enough for the fall with this short-sleeved turtle neck but will be nice and cozy during the winter layered over a sweater.
Buying a new coat at the beginning of the fall season was always something I looked forward too. My mom and I would go out to the mall and I would get to find one coat that would take me through the winter. I always remember making it such a big deal because I wanted to make sure I was making a wise decision. Now that I buy my own clothes (a little too often – sorry Brian!) I still think about making a good choice but I like to have a little more fun with my clothes.
Do you have a piece of clothing that brings back memories? I think that’s why I am always drawn to a fabulous coat. It reminds me of the wonderful women in my life who have worn them well and trained me from a young age that style is important.
