A Twist on the Classic Trench Coat

There is nothing more classic than a trench coat. They are versatile, comfortable and practical. It’s no wonder we all have some version of a trench in our closets. I have always been a fan of outerwear since I love to layer my looks. A rain resistant trench coat over a cute dress (seen in this post) and Hunter Boots is one of my favorite ways to style a trench coat in the warmer seasons. With the transition from summer to fall in full swing I am even more excited to be able to layer my trench coats over my jeans and sweaters.

<div class="sq-sc-column sq-sc-column-2"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-2283 size-large" src="http://www.waketonroad.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Cherries-and-Stripes-Waketon-Road-19-683x1024.jpg" alt="Cherries and Stripes - Waketon Road-19" width="640" height="960" /></div><div class="sq-sc-column sq-sc-column-2"><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-2310" src="http://www.waketonroad.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Cherries-and-Stripes-Waketon-Road-46-683x1024.jpg" alt="A Twist on the Classic Trench - Waketon Road Blog" width="640" height="960" /> </div>

This striped trench coat is one of my favorite recent J.Crew sale finds. I love that it is light weight so that I can wear it comfortably when it’s still warm, but it will be perfect paired over a sweater in the fall. The blue and white striped shirt look is so different from the classic style. I love patterned coats. They add an extra level of interest to your outfit that is often covered up because of the need to stay warm and dry. Don’t you hate it when the weather gets in the way of a great outfit?!

<div class="sq-sc-column sq-sc-column-2"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-2283 size-large" src="http://www.waketonroad.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Cherries-and-Stripes-Waketon-Road-19-683x1024.jpg" alt="Cherries and Stripes - Waketon Road-19" width="640" height="960" /></div><div class="sq-sc-column sq-sc-column-2"><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-2310" src="http://www.waketonroad.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Cherries-and-Stripes-Waketon-Road-46-683x1024.jpg" alt="A Twist on the Classic Trench - Waketon Road Blog" width="640" height="960" /> </div>

That’s where the twist on a classic trench coat comes in. There are so many new amazing styles that go beyond the typical khaki colored trench. Not that I have anything against a classic style (I’m comin for ya Burberry Kensington-you will be mine one day)! But, with all of these great patterns, why not have a little fun with outerwear!? My striped trench is sold out, but I linked a few similar styles and a few other favorites below (this lace trench… To die for!).

<div class="sq-sc-column sq-sc-column-2"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-2283 size-large" src="http://www.waketonroad.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Cherries-and-Stripes-Waketon-Road-19-683x1024.jpg" alt="Cherries and Stripes - Waketon Road-19" width="640" height="960" /></div><div class="sq-sc-column sq-sc-column-2"><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-2310" src="http://www.waketonroad.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Cherries-and-Stripes-Waketon-Road-46-683x1024.jpg" alt="A Twist on the Classic Trench - Waketon Road Blog" width="640" height="960" /> </div>

I paired my striped trench coat with the cutest little cherry t-shirt that I just had to have! I’ve mentioned before that I love a great red, white and blue look (seen here and here). It’s one of the easiest combinations to throw together because you know it’s always going to work.

I haven’t branched out from the classic trench, but I do love jackets with patterns. It is beyond frustrating when the weather gets in the way of an outfit. In Edmonton, it gets freezing, and I mean freezing. So my outfits in the winter consist of a parka and boots, every day of the week!
